This Easton Press edition presents two of Anton Chekhov’s major dramatic works, both premiering at the Moscow Art Theatre in the early 20th century and establishing his reputation as a revolutionary playwright.
The Cherry Orchard (1904), Chekhov’s final play, depicts an aristocratic Russian family unable to adapt to changing social realities. Madame Ranevskaya returns from Paris to her estate, which must be sold to pay debts. The merchant Lopakhin—son of former serfs—proposes cutting down the beloved cherry orchard for development, but the family cannot accept this practical solution. The orchard is sold at auction, the family departs, and the sound of axes signals the old order’s end. Chekhov insisted the work was a comedy, though productions often emphasize its melancholy.
Three Sisters (1901) follows the Prozorov sisters—Olga, Masha, and Irina—living in a provincial town and yearning to return to Moscow, which represents everything their current life lacks. As years pass, their hopes fade, relationships disappoint, and Moscow remains distant. The play examines unfulfilled dreams, the passage of time, and the gap between aspiration and reality.
Both works exemplify Chekhov’s innovations: subtle psychological realism, ensemble casts without clear protagonists, action arising from character rather than plot mechanics, and tragicomic tone blending humor with profound sadness. His influence on modern drama remains immeasurable.
