This Easton Press edition presents Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, the 1870 science fiction novel that helped define the genre while showcasing Verne’s gift for prophetic technological imagination. The story begins with reports of a mysterious sea creature threatening ships, prompting French marine biologist Pierre Aronnax, his servant Conseil, and Canadian harpooner Ned Land to join an expedition to destroy it.

They discover the “monster” is actually the Nautilus, an advanced submarine commanded by the enigmatic Captain Nemo—a brilliant, tormented figure who has renounced surface civilization. Rather than being killed, the three are taken captive to protect Nemo’s secrets, becoming unwilling passengers on an extraordinary underwater voyage.

The Nautilus travels across the world’s oceans: exploring coral reefs, hunting in underwater forests, visiting the submerged ruins of Atlantis, navigating beneath the ice at the South Pole, and battling giant squid. Verne provides detailed descriptions of marine life, underwater geography, and the submarine’s technology—much of which anticipated actual developments in submarine engineering decades later.

Nemo remains deliberately mysterious—a man of vast knowledge and resources driven by unnamed tragedy and rage against oppression. The novel concludes ambiguously as the captives escape during a maelstrom, leaving Nemo’s ultimate fate uncertain. Verne created both thrilling adventure and serious speculation about technology’s potential, establishing conventions that continue shaping science fiction today.
