This Easton Press edition presents Henry James’s The Portrait of a Lady, published in 1881, widely considered his masterpiece and one of the great psychological novels in English. The story follows Isabel Archer, a spirited young American woman who arrives in England with firm ideas about independence and self-determination.

Isabel inherits a fortune through the generosity of her cousin Ralph Touchett, who hopes wealth will allow her to fulfill her potential. Instead, the inheritance makes her vulnerable to manipulation. She rejects worthy suitors and marries Gilbert Osmond, an expatriate aesthete living in Florence who proves to be a calculating egotist interested primarily in her money and using her as an ornament to his refined existence.

The novel traces Isabel’s gradual recognition of her mistake—her awakening to Osmond’s true nature, the conspiracy between him and Madame Merle that ensnared her, and the prison her marriage has become. James explores consciousness itself with unprecedented depth, rendering Isabel’s psychological development through subtle shifts in perception and understanding.

The ending remains deliberately ambiguous: Isabel returns to Rome and her unhappy marriage, though her reasons remain open to interpretation—duty, pride, concern for Osmond’s daughter Pansy, or some complex combination of motives. James examines freedom, the consequences of choice, and the limitations placed on women with extraordinary psychological subtlety, creating a character whose interior life feels remarkably modern.
