This Easton Press edition presents D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover, the 1928 novel that became one of the 20th century’s most controversial literary works. The story centers on Constance Chatterley, married to Clifford, a baronet left paralyzed and impotent from war injuries. Their marriage becomes emotionally sterile as Clifford retreats into intellectual pursuits and mining interests.
Constance begins an affair with Oliver Mellors, the estate’s working-class gamekeeper. Lawrence depicts their physical relationship explicitly—then-shocking passages that led to decades of censorship and obscenity trials. The novel wasn’t legally published unexpurgated in the UK until 1960, following a landmark trial that helped liberalize obscenity laws.
Lawrence intended more than provocation—he examined the dehumanizing effects of industrialization and class barriers while arguing for authentic emotional and physical connection. Mellors represents vitality and genuine feeling against Clifford’s mechanical intellectualism. The novel contrasts sterile upper-class existence with embodied, passionate life, though Lawrence’s treatment of class and his idealization of working-class masculinity remain debatable.
The work explores themes of alienation, the relationship between mind and body, and whether love can transcend social division. Despite—or perhaps because of—its notoriety, Lady Chatterley’s Lover stands as Lawrence’s final major work, a frank examination of sexuality, authenticity, and the possibility of regeneration through physical and emotional intimacy.
