This Easton Press edition presents Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe, the 1819 historical novel that helped define the genre and shaped popular understanding of medieval England. Set in 12th-century England during the period following the Third Crusade, the novel depicts the tension between Saxon and Norman populations nearly a century after the Conquest.
The story centers on Wilfred of Ivanhoe, a Saxon knight disinherited for following Richard the Lionheart to the Holy Land. Upon his return, he finds England under the misrule of Prince John while Richard remains imprisoned abroad. Ivanhoe must navigate political intrigue, prove himself at the tournament of Ashby, and rescue his betrothed Rowena from captivity at Torquilstone Castle.
Scott populates the narrative with memorable characters: the mysterious Black Knight, the outlaw Locksley (Robin Hood), the Jewish moneylender Isaac of York and his daughter Rebecca, and the villainous Templar Brian de Bois-Guilbert. Rebecca’s trial for witchcraft provides one of the novel’s most dramatic sequences.
What Ivanhoe accomplished was remarkable—it made medieval history accessible and exciting to 19th-century readers while exploring themes of ethnic conflict, religious prejudice, and evolving social structures. Scott’s influence on subsequent historical fiction cannot be overstated. Though his prose style feels antiquated to modern readers, the novel’s narrative power and vivid set pieces retain their appeal.
