This Easton Press edition presents Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, the 1899 novella that remains one of literature’s most powerful examinations of colonialism and moral corruption. The narrative unfolds through a frame structure: the sailor Marlow recounts his journey up the Congo River to a group of men aboard a ship on the Thames.

Marlow has been hired by a Belgian trading company to retrieve Kurtz, an ivory trader who has established himself deep in the African interior and stopped communicating with company headquarters. As Marlow travels upriver, he encounters the brutal realities of colonial exploitation—the Company’s stations reveal systematic cruelty, incompetence, and greed masquerading as civilization’s advance.

Kurtz, when finally encountered, proves to be a figure who has descended into barbarism, wielding absolute power over the indigenous population. His final words—”The horror! The horror!”—suggest recognition of what he has become, though their precise meaning remains ambiguous.

Conrad crafted the work as a meditation on imperialism’s corrupting influence and the fragility of civilized values when divorced from social constraints. The novella’s dense symbolism and psychological depth have generated endless interpretation. Its treatment of African characters remains controversial, sparking ongoing debate about whether the work critiques racism or perpetuates it. Heart of Darkness profoundly influenced modernist literature, particularly T.S. Eliot and subsequent writers grappling with civilization’s darker aspects.
