This Easton Press edition presents Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac, the 1897 verse drama that became one of France’s most beloved theatrical works. Written in rhyming alexandrine couplets, the play follows the real historical figure Cyrano—reimagined as a brilliant poet, swordsman, and wit cursed with an enormous nose that makes him believe himself unlovable.
Cyrano loves his cousin Roxane but considers himself too ugly to declare his feelings. When Roxane falls for Christian de Neuvillette, a handsome but inarticulate cadet in Cyrano’s regiment, Cyrano agrees to provide the words Christian lacks. He writes passionate love letters and whispers poetry from the shadows while Christian speaks to Roxane, creating a composite lover combining physical beauty with eloquent soul.
The deception continues through years of war. Christian dies in battle, and Cyrano maintains the secret for fifteen years while visiting Roxane weekly at the convent where she mourns Christian. Only on his deathbed does Cyrano reveal the truth—that the words Roxane treasured were his own.
Rostand crafted a work balancing wit, romance, and tragedy. Cyrano embodies the gascon spirit—proud, defiant, poetic—while examining themes of inner versus outer beauty, the power of language, and unrequited love’s nobility. The play’s panache, memorable speeches (particularly the “nose speech”), and emotional power have ensured its enduring popularity across languages and cultures.
